Dubai: USA Elections and 19 Second Graders

We are here in Dubai visiting with our family. Our son and his wife are involved in education where my son is director of a proprietary American school. His wife is the assistant elementary school principal. While we are visiting here we hear and see "the other side of the coin" when it comes to how the world works. It is very interesting.

So you need to know that I have not been sick or mad or anything of the sort. We are here in the UAE visiting and it turns out the challenge of simply signing in to the VNP on our families internet can stop us in our tracks. I have been taken to tasks by ATT for using more data than I should. The habit of picking up my phone to have a small conversations with friends is so engrained is a problem. The "data cops" sort of shut me down. Thank heavens they didn't just let me go for the gold! Wow.

We talk non-stop for a couple of days getting ourselves reconnected. In this particular case, politics was on the table immediately. My family is Democratic and my daughter-in-law's is Republican. We all agree on everything because we work from a middle ground. The shock of the election resounded through the world in Dubai much like it did in America.

My daughter-in-law was still in a place of shock and dismay when we arrived last Monday. As she talked about the classrooms in her school the only emotion she could convey was the one we all felt on 9/11. The children of all ages simply were devastated and she found many hiding and crying. I could understand how she felt. I was in the classroom on the day that JFK was assassinated.

I was confused. I simply had not thought about how those Muslim families of the 19 second graders she found weeping saw what had happened in our country. We live in our little world and really don't connect as much as we should with the normal world of others around the globe. And please trust me, this is a very normal modern Muslim country. These people do not support terrorism and block immigration of people from any Middle Eastern country that has even the remotest connections the extreme Islamic groups. Unlike the USA, they can block ultra conservative or terrorist groups with no problem. The Neo-anything would not be tolerated.

The little children were hiding under the stairs. When my daughter-in-law found them, they were sobbing. They told her that they feared for their families living in the United States. She said that they knew that their aunts and uncles would be treated badly. It scared them because they had listened to Donald Trumps words on their television just as we had. They knew and they saw and they cannot un-know it ever. I suppose they were as changed at that point just as my students were all those years ago when our President Kennedy was assassinated by a man that it turns out had connections with Russia.

Now time is passing, parents or the children here continue to watch and wait much the same as we are. Their world is so connected with ours that it is hard to see when one begins and another ends.

Had you thought about this? Did you feels any connections with the children around the world that are not that much different than yours? I wonder if we will ever understand that our country is capable of destroying not only themselves but everyone around the globe as well. And please don't go to a place where two wrongs make a right. I can see how that would happen.

It is just a thought. My vacations continues. Of course I will share pictures and details of this adventure. We will journey into Jordan where we will visit Petra, the Jordan River, Mt. Nebo and the Dead Sea. Life goes on but it seems that, once again, it will never be quite the same.

Merry Christmas everyone.

In The End I Would Not Hold My Country Hostage...

Being an American is a great privilege and even if I didn't choose the president we have, I will always choose my country. There you have it.

We are leaving for a trip to Dubai in December and I know that this election will come up with people from around the world. Our Canadian friends have already had their say and I hate to admit it but I may pretend to be one of them when we travel.

We were in Spain when G.W. Bush started the war in Iraq. It was not a pretty thing to see or feel. Being so hated and reviled by a foreign country takes it's toll. The Spanish people took to the streets in protest of Asner's throwing his lot in with Bush. At that time my oldest son and his wife were living in Saudi Arabia and we sent them home to experience a terrorist attack on their compound and school. So I know first hand that what our country does and says plays out for U.S. citizens around the globe.

One of my youngest son's good high school friends is second generation Filipino. He is feeling very threatened right now. His Facebook post asked "What do our neighbors really think about me and my family?" In the wake of this election I can see how he might feel that way. He is a college professor and teaches poetry to his students.

We cannot unsee or unhear what we have experienced. I watched every debate and followed the news on rallies. The behavior of many people at the Trump rallies made me a little sick. Those of us that were appalled at the tone of those were not enough to make a difference when we voted.

So, now we will do what Secretary Clinton asked us to do. We will move on. Unlike the Republicans that were elected when President Obama took office, I am a Democrat that would NOT encourage the obstruction of all that is good to make Trump suffer. We cannot hold our country hostage because we are self-righteous or even right.

In the end I can say that my husband I are proud to have been a Hillary Clinton supporter. What I am not proud of is that I did NOT wear my heart on my sleeve because I didn't want to offend or argue with friends. I could have done better than I did.

I was With Her and in the sense that what that campaign stood for will not go away, I suppose I still am.

So when we travel in December I don't think I will hide no matter the cost. Being an American is a great privilege and even if I didn't choose the president we have, I will always choose my country. There you have it.

So if you want to vent here, please feel free. We are among friends after all.

Be well.

2016 Election: On Wishing Time to Pass

Now I find myself wishing for the election to be over. That is something I said I would never do. Wishing my life to pass more quickly seems foolish to me.

Even when I was a very young woman with children living in a cold, drafty farmhouse down a dusty lane, I did not wish for even one day to pass faster than the others. My family worried for us and actually asked me if I was anxious to move on...didn't I wish that we were out of there? The answer was always a firm no. Life could be over soon even back then. I did not want to miss one single day.

When times are hard or heartbreaking, it would be very easy to miss the beautiful sunset or the warm autumn air. I wish I had an app on my phone that reminded me to take note. Do you suppose there is one of those? I suppose not.

As for the election in 2016, our life as we know it hangs in the balance. We will see if the American people are paying attention or if they aren't. I, for one, am with HER!

Tax Returns...Whatever (yawn)

I don't care about the 900,000,000+ loss on Trump 1995 tax return. I care about how Trump might make the world a better place.

It turns out that so much of the stuff that is suppose to be shocking isn't...not anymore. After living through so many elections and political conjuring I am past even raising an eyebrow.

I did not care about Bill Clinton's sex scandal...I didn't care and I certainly didn't want to know. History had shown me that the ego of a president leads him to do stupid things in their private life. It has always been so.

I did not care about the moral majority nearly as much as I should have. I was insulted when they implied that I was going to hell but not that much. I don't believe in hell so what the heck.

And I do not care that Donald Trump is such a bad business man that he lost $915,729,293 in 1995. He has big problems but it is the way that business is done in his bad banking circle of friends. (I will care if he is elected and does that to our country.)

What I do care about is a seeing a glimmer of hope in one fact that shows he has some charitable thoughts. Has he ever done anything that did not make him look big and important? Has he ever made the world a better place even for one day?

Don't talk to me about beauty pageants or golf courses please. Not that a few women didn't benefit from that but a picture is emerging that leads a common woman like me to see that there was no sacrifice and there was a lot of ogling. As for the golf courses, I like to play golf too but something tells me I will never play on one of his courses. That is fine but golf course building is not a charitable activity.

So, as for the $915,729,293 loss on a 1995 tax return, I don't care! All that does is confirm what we thought we knew. What I care about is a president that will make this world better.

What do you think?

Politics: Supporter or Evangelist

I received a "Support Hillary" bumper sticker this morning. I don't really think I have ever had that happen before...no politician has ever noticed me at all...my husband yes but me no. I was surprised.

But...what surprised me the most was my unwillingness to wear my heart on my sleeve. When I my husband told me to put it on the car I didn't want to do that so I didn't. What was that all about?

I am a Democrat and very liberal in some ways. I do think that Clinton is very smart and of course she is a woman and there is always that. So why don't I feel completely certain that she is a good choice or a bad choice.

I do support her candidacy and watch the primaries. I did vote for her. It could be that I have seen too much in my life and honestly know what could go very wrong.

It turns out that I am not the evangelist for the woman. In the end I simply will vote for the best of the two people that are running.

There you have it!

PS: I cannot even bring myself to slam Trump even though I know I will NEVER vote for him. Did you read the article about his wife in the New Yorker? Yikes!

And, is this campaign driving you crazy?
