Are You Going to Hell?

Note: I have decided to unfriend or block friends on Facebook because of their political beliefs. It is a very unliberal thing to do I know. I don’t know how to have a conversation in a world with so much hatred. Am I going to hell? Maybe. We will see. Here is the story.

I had an interesting exchange with a Facebook follower. She and I have known each other for many years. We played golf together in Oregon. We sat together with the same group for lunch and had conversations revolving around stuff that had nothing to do with life or politics.

After this last election I began to see that she was as out spoken and firm in her beliefs as I was and we did no agree. But, I also saw that even though we are different, we truly do want the same things. Our differences are in how we go about getting to a good place. And our tolerance for those that disagree with our beliefs are tenuous to say the least.

Recently I shared a quote made by our new congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Ortiz. Ms. Ortiz is probably a socialist and her group of supporters may have the idea of taking down everything to build a new society in the United States. It is very appealing to them. Maybe they have nothing to lose...who knows. I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING. I DID NOT INTEND IT TO BE A THREAT TO ANYONE’s BELIEFS.

But I digress...the part of Ms. Ocasio-Ortiz’s statement that touched a nerve with my Facebook follower was the part about "dark money". I really don’t understand what that is all about because in my world illegal is illegal no matter who you are. Two wrongs do not make either party right.

"What is George Soros funding?" she asked. I did not know so I looked this man up.

This is what Wikipedia said about Soros (including footnotes):
Soros is a well-known supporter of progressive and liberal political causes, to which he dispenses donations through his foundation, the Open Society Foundations.[15] Between 1979 and 2011, he donated more than $11 billion to various philanthropic causes;[16][17] by 2017, his donations "on civil initiatives to reduce poverty and increase transparency, and on scholarships and universities around the world" totaled $12 billion.[18] He influenced the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s,[19] and provided one of Europe’s largest higher education endowments to the Central European University in his Hungarian hometown.[20] His extensive funding of political causes has made him a "bugaboo of European nationalists".[21] Numerous American conservatives have promoted false claims that characterize Soros as a singularly dangerous "puppetmaster" behind a variety of alleged global plots, with The New York Times reporting that by 2018 these claims had "moved from the fringes to the mainstream" of Republican politics.[22][23][24][25][26]

Please note that he helped bring down communism in Eastern Europe and supports education through a foundation. HOWEVER, when I went to check on this foundation I found it was private, unrated and indeed called "the least transparent" of all those around by some groups. Here is another incident where you really can’t believe Fox or The Daily Kos because they, like the rest of us, DO NOT KNOW!

I am all about taking the middle road...now days it is not the road traveled the most obviously because the question that came back at me was "What is the middle? Do you know?" I interpreted that to be an honest question, not sarcasm. PBS or BBC seems to be the one that comes to mind.

But, in this day and age where my Republican friends (and yes I do have those) cannot even talk with me about our world, I am very careful. I love my friends a great deal.

So, the beat goes on. Do you think we can survive another 4 years of what we have now? I do but it will not be fun for anyone because that place in peoples mind that tell them that they are right and those that don’t agree are going to hell is a very frightening place to be at least for me.

What do you think?

  1. It's interesting that you post this now, right after I unfriended a long-time friend because she stated her belief that Muslims are taking over and will try to enact sharia law here in the US. This is a bridge too far for me. I had already blocked the most blatant of my friends who posted political beliefs on Facebook. I have no room in my consciousness for such hate. And there's no changing people's minds. I try to be unpolitical almost always in my blogs and on FB. :-(

  2. Politics wherever you are in the world seems to be getting so toxic. People seem less able to tolerate ideas and beliefs that are different from their own. Brexit inthe UK has caused family disputes and all manner of disagreements. I am not sure where the blame for this lies. I wonder if social media might foster allegiances along tribal lines. Lots of ‘shouting’ at each other and not much listening going on.

  3. I too try to be open to all ideas (and I too am a middle-of-the-roader which doesn't mean I'm wishy-washy as some people charge, it means I'm reasonable!). But I must admit I have blocked friends and relatives who constantly post political rants, both left and right, sometimes because they're hateful but more often because they're so boring ... the same thing over and over again. Anyway, I think we can blame cable news and social media for most of the hate in this country these days.

  4. Unfortunately, it seems to be the belief that Social Media gives us the right to be mean. Adults talk about bullying, when we are some of the worst offenders. I have only blocked a couple of people, but have unfollowed many. Life is too short to have to spend my morning reading nasty comments / posts / memes from people I consider friends. We will survive this, but it will be a long, bumpy road.

  5. Thank you all for your thoughts. I liked Tom’s take on the “boring” idea. Isn’t it true that I will pick up on it and feel the need to reply with my “reasonable” ideas.,:) I feel much better today. I that unfriended or silenced menu people. I am sure they have done the same with me.

    Now we just move on...right?

  6. Anyone who has been to my blog will know what my wading pools are. Most turn and run, I think, because it's all about struggle, my Christian (Catholic) faith, family. Not everyone's cup of tea, I understand. But I have shut down 2 people. Both were condescending in their own ways (I am sick to the gills with this type), and their comments could hurt readers.

So, I removed one, the other, well, I just made things clear. There are others with different views but since I am not in the business to paint everyone over in the same colour, and neither are they, we're all good.

We have every right to block anyone from our life. The only thing I'd watch out for would be how often I do it. Sometimes, I think, it's good to tolerate until it threatens to be abusive. Tolerance helps us mature and grow. It keeps us from the danger of isolation and intolerance, I believe.

Five Little Ducks...stories played out!

The children's song about the little ducks leaving the nest to fly away has always been one of my favorites.  Every mother has seen their babies fly away and rejoiced. Life comes full circle. Animals live that same cycle. Babies grow up. Birds leave the nest. Life goes on. So when the three ducks show up every year near my patio I am not surprised. But I am puzzled that it always seems to be the same three. Something just doesn't seem right. It appears the one did not fly away at all. Five little ducks Went out to play Over the hills and far away. The mommy duck went "quack, quack quack," Four little ducks came swimming back... And then Three Two and One. A drake, a female duck (a hen) and a not quite a drake but still not a hen gather here on the 5th green of the golf course. She leads and the other two follow along obediently. They eat, sleep, and guard each other. Each and every day this time of year they come.  I have not named them. Jinxing them would be very pos...

How to be a Snowbird in 2024

Early years in RV resort! Our motor home is parked next to our  first Park Model When it begins to cool in the evenings and the geese fly in formation, my mind turns to Arizona. Yearning for the desert air and vibrant blue sky is compel me to fly away. I do it every year and will as long as I am  allowed. Townhome near Tucson's Pantano Wash and bike trail. We started this way of life when we retired. First with a fifth-wheel trailer, later with a motor home, and finally in something permanent that evolved over the years.  First, it was a park model in an RV Resort, then a townhouse close to walking trails, and finally into a home on a small golf course.  Congress Hotel from window of near by hotel. Each time we moved, we upscaled and increased our monetary wealth. That is the way our mind works. It is as though we couldn't just have fun without working a lot. We painted and planted flowers and haunted thrift stores to find just the right furniture. We were always hav...

How to be a 12 Month Snow Bird

Vacation Rental in Mexico I live around snowbirds 6 months of the year. I have heard those people say that they all want to live the "snowbird" lifestyle when they go home. But it just is not possible. They are isolated and cold. Social activities with friends and beautiful weather are greatly missed when they return to the realities of their "real" life. One couple I visited with lately returned to Florida this morning where they own a home. The woman is a nurse and works in the summer. They are not going home until May this year. It is too cold in Michigan in the spring so they are hoping to extend their good weather season by simply staying away. Besides that they love their Florida lifestyle a lot. Last week I visited with a woman that lives the snowbird lifestyle year around. No going home to the Midwest in the spring. They essentially vacation 12 month out of the year. And I thought their solution for avoiding unpleasant weather and keeping their lifestyle in...
