I Could Do That But Why Would I??

When was the last time you sat down to write a letter or a short note? Have you become as dependent on that smartphone and texting as I have? the wonderful devices suggest the next word and do a spell check as I am writing.

I was at the golf course yesterday and I needed to leave a written note for a friend. I found a piece of paper and a pencil so I could do the task. Do you know how hard it is to even find a piece of paper and a pencil?

Then I began writing the note:
I lave...no have
New piece of paper:
the clothes....no cloths for the table.
New piece of paper:
Their...no there...are plenty.
Barbara
I wanted to add more but I had torn up three note pad sheets and just gave up. Now you might think that I would worry about that sort of thing but I don't. It is a bit like that bicycle I used to ride. I COULD ride it if I wanted but what is the point.

It is just a thought.

  1. I actually write (and mail) personal notes all the time (like at least once a week). I love notepaper and can't stop buying it (or making it), so that's not a problem. I love stamps, and always have a sheet on hand, and most of all, I love imagining my friends opening their mailboxes to a real note. My next step will be real letters....you know, with more than four sentences!

  2. First comment: I started to write a few things down the other day, and had the same problem. We've gotten out of the habit. I do write a very short note to my aunt occasionally. So there is that. Enjoy your blog.

  3. Ha ha! I guess we are all a product of our communication devices. Btw, what's a pencil?

    1. Evidently you are asking the wrong person. It is much like asking my husband to bring me a dust cloth. He looks at me like I have two heads and points out that he doesn't dust so how would he even know where to look for such a thing?

  4. If you have ever read "The Artist's Way" you are familiar with the "morning pages". I do several pages most mornings... pen and spiral notebook. I communicate electronically, but just for myself I love the feeling of pen on paper and thoughts that flow.

    1. What wonderful way to begin the day. See, the deal is even back when everyone used pen and paper I used my typewriter. I cannot seem to get my thoughts down fast enough. The problem was I was a terrible typist so every letter was filled with words in margins and make outs. It has never been a perfect world.

  5. Next, you will be asking me if I can recall my daughter's phone number. I would try, if I could find a pay phone to call her from.

  6. A while back I remember well trying to make my fingers write a note on a piece of paper, and it was so unfamiliar I decided that maybe I'd better spend some time with a pen and some paper. Made a huge difference in my state of mind, realizing it was just temporary from lack of practice. :-)

    1. You know, they say that when we teach children to use cursive in school and it is a very important part of the brain development. Maybe we do not all need to take up the pennonce in a while and learn or relearn how to actually write.

Five Little Ducks...stories played out!

The children's song about the little ducks leaving the nest to fly away has always been one of my favorites.  Every mother has seen their babies fly away and rejoiced. Life comes full circle. Animals live that same cycle. Babies grow up. Birds leave the nest. Life goes on. So when the three ducks show up every year near my patio I am not surprised. But I am puzzled that it always seems to be the same three. Something just doesn't seem right. It appears the one did not fly away at all. Five little ducks Went out to play Over the hills and far away. The mommy duck went "quack, quack quack," Four little ducks came swimming back... And then Three Two and One. A drake, a female duck (a hen) and a not quite a drake but still not a hen gather here on the 5th green of the golf course. She leads and the other two follow along obediently. They eat, sleep, and guard each other. Each and every day this time of year they come.  I have not named them. Jinxing them would be very pos...

How to be a 12 Month Snow Bird

Vacation Rental in Mexico I live around snowbirds 6 months of the year. I have heard those people say that they all want to live the "snowbird" lifestyle when they go home. But it just is not possible. They are isolated and cold. Social activities with friends and beautiful weather are greatly missed when they return to the realities of their "real" life. One couple I visited with lately returned to Florida this morning where they own a home. The woman is a nurse and works in the summer. They are not going home until May this year. It is too cold in Michigan in the spring so they are hoping to extend their good weather season by simply staying away. Besides that they love their Florida lifestyle a lot. Last week I visited with a woman that lives the snowbird lifestyle year around. No going home to the Midwest in the spring. They essentially vacation 12 month out of the year. And I thought their solution for avoiding unpleasant weather and keeping their lifestyle in...

If You Build It, They Will Come...Maybe!

It all began with a antique window in front of a local shop. It had been painted yellow, the glass was loose and all of the hinges and latches were gone. My old friend Betty would have approved...she would tell me it was just broken enough and damaged enough for me to drag it home. When my dear husband saw it, he wondered what he was meant to do with it. Imagine his surprise when he was presented with the plan to build a small neighborhood library exchange. It wasn't the first time he had heard me ask "How hard could it be?" Now it is six weeks later and we mounted the darling little library exchange on two posts in our front yard. I love it. Now the question is, will they come or has the time passed when people actually read something made of paper? Our association president stopped by and admired the box but left after telling me that he only read books on his Kindle. We will see. Would you bring a book and take a book? b+
