How Do We Live with the "Drip, Drip, Drip of Existence?"

Do you watch Elementary? Does the American version of Sherlock Holmes hold any appeal for you? I am a great fan of this show. I love that it is smart and above all quotable.

In the segment I watch this last week called The Eternity Injection, Holmes was in a big black funk. He is a recovering addict with 2 years of AA meetings under his belt and now he realizes that this is his life...forever. Day after day, week after week he will be a recovering addict....no more, no less. I loved the line he used as he talked to Watson about his feelings:
Now I think if I were to use drugs again, it would, in fact, be an anticlimax. It would be a surrender to the drip, drip, drip of existence.
It is a very depressing thought isn't it...the drip, drip, drip of existence? I think that we have all faced that feeling at one time or another. It is the mundane act of living after we have reached our goal and must now live without that tantalizingly need to conquer what stands in our way.

It has occurred to me that the very fact that we do live lives that are essential the same day after day makes it more and more important that we continue to find new challenges.

For example, the average person that leaves a job or sees a child grown or even gets that up level college degree faces a life empty of the challenge those things brought. If they don't love new challenges I can imagine that days and weeks must seem like eternities.

Can we change the way we approach life and make ourselves interested in learning or being creative or seeing every movie or even reading all the Nance Drew Mysteries? I don't know. But if we can, it would be a very good idea. Otherwise the "drip, drip, drip of existence" will take it's toll. We may not live forever but it will certainly feel that way.

  1. I think life is long...especially if you don't enjoy it. I do think we can change the way we approach life. Not always easy, but that's the journey. Much rather go down trying! Lovely post.

    1. You are so right...life is long. We must grasp the joy and hang on tight through the whole ride. It is an adventure to say the least.

  2. I like some routine - the morning and evening rituals especially. As long as I say "yes" to what comes along I think I'm on the right path.

    1. Yes you are Linda. I am like you in that I love my rituals. I think they replace some of the space and time that is the hardest for me.

  3. Once again I'm reminded of the saying - do life so life doesn't do you. I find solace and comfort in the "mundane", which reminds me of a book - Chop Wood, Carry Water. I think when we are mindful in our daily practices, there is little "drip, drip, drip of existence". How many of us have been glad to get home to routine after an exciting vacation?

    1. Oh, yes I know what you mean. I love my space and my bed and the things I do daily. They are the water for my life. The drip, drip is not possible when there is no place for it to live and grown.

      Be well.

Five Little Ducks...stories played out!

The children's song about the little ducks leaving the nest to fly away has always been one of my favorites.  Every mother has seen their babies fly away and rejoiced. Life comes full circle. Animals live that same cycle. Babies grow up. Birds leave the nest. Life goes on. So when the three ducks show up every year near my patio I am not surprised. But I am puzzled that it always seems to be the same three. Something just doesn't seem right. It appears the one did not fly away at all. Five little ducks Went out to play Over the hills and far away. The mommy duck went "quack, quack quack," Four little ducks came swimming back... And then Three Two and One. A drake, a female duck (a hen) and a not quite a drake but still not a hen gather here on the 5th green of the golf course. She leads and the other two follow along obediently. They eat, sleep, and guard each other. Each and every day this time of year they come.  I have not named them. Jinxing them would be very pos...

How to be a 12 Month Snow Bird

Vacation Rental in Mexico I live around snowbirds 6 months of the year. I have heard those people say that they all want to live the "snowbird" lifestyle when they go home. But it just is not possible. They are isolated and cold. Social activities with friends and beautiful weather are greatly missed when they return to the realities of their "real" life. One couple I visited with lately returned to Florida this morning where they own a home. The woman is a nurse and works in the summer. They are not going home until May this year. It is too cold in Michigan in the spring so they are hoping to extend their good weather season by simply staying away. Besides that they love their Florida lifestyle a lot. Last week I visited with a woman that lives the snowbird lifestyle year around. No going home to the Midwest in the spring. They essentially vacation 12 month out of the year. And I thought their solution for avoiding unpleasant weather and keeping their lifestyle in...

If You Build It, They Will Come...Maybe!

It all began with a antique window in front of a local shop. It had been painted yellow, the glass was loose and all of the hinges and latches were gone. My old friend Betty would have approved...she would tell me it was just broken enough and damaged enough for me to drag it home. When my dear husband saw it, he wondered what he was meant to do with it. Imagine his surprise when he was presented with the plan to build a small neighborhood library exchange. It wasn't the first time he had heard me ask "How hard could it be?" Now it is six weeks later and we mounted the darling little library exchange on two posts in our front yard. I love it. Now the question is, will they come or has the time passed when people actually read something made of paper? Our association president stopped by and admired the box but left after telling me that he only read books on his Kindle. We will see. Would you bring a book and take a book? b+
