Yucatan Pennisula, Quintana Roo, Mexico: A Day in the Life of a Retiree

On Speaking Spanglish
When I post on Facebook it marks my location as Quintana Roo...I love the way the words slide off my tongue.  I find myself speaking the most unusual Spanglish when I am here. Because I know about 50 words of Spanish, mostly tourist talk. I want to learn more. But it doesn't always work out like I want it to.

The other day we were ordering our lunch and our waiter spoke that wonderful melodic English that Spanish speakers use. I was listening in my Spanglish when he suddenly asked in the clearest, unaccented English, "Do you want soup?" I looked at him like he had three heads. I could not recognize my own language spoken perfectly because I listening in Spanglish! It made me laugh when I realized what had happened.

After playing a par 3 golf
Hot and Steamy...I did not realize I was amphibious!
We played golf yesterday. It was hot and extremely humid. It felt like I was trying to breath under water. I started the 3 par course looking like a respectable lady of a certain age...my arms partially covered because I do not get my arms out even in the summer anymore. As the round ended, I was not looking as cool and collected as I would have liked. My husband on the other hand said he was not hot at all! What is wrong with me...or him?

The little golf course was absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Huge expanses of sand with smaller landing spots made it a challenge but we had a lot of fun. If you are a man, you will find it especially challenging because the distances are all wrong for you. But if you are a woman, you are in heaven!

Playa del Carmen...tourist pleasures!
Mayan Celebration
Note: Did you know the Maya comprise the single
 largest group of indigenous people
on the North American Continent? (Fodors)
Restaurant Attraction?

Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is one of the perfect tourist destinations. The photographic opportunities are without end and the shear fun of the whole place just blows me away.  The Mayan people perform in the plaza, iguanas sit on the tables waiting patiently for I do no know what and liquor bottles sit in the window of the upstairs patio of the hotel across the street. And then there is the beach! Oh my goodness. It all just takes my breath away.

Raining
It is raining today...solid clouds from horizon to horizon. The temperature lingers in the mid seventies and it feels heavenly.  If you are on vacation, you always need a down day. Read Eat! Write! Think! Relax!

Life is good.

  1. I am thoroughly enjoying your posts on the Yucatan. We have recently retired (October) and are heading down for 2 weeks at the beginning of December. We have never been to the east coast of Mexico, so quite excited!!
Would you be able to list some of the sights and attractions that should not be missed by newbies like us?
We are staying for 1 week at the Playacar Princess in Playa del Carmen. This is an all-inclusive week which will give dear husband time to unwind and just do nothing except relax, read books and have some fun (he has not been so good at giving up work so far and even the days he is 'retired' he is still thinking of it I think).
Second week is in Cancun at a Non-inclusive ... relatives and daughter are joining us, so hoping to do some sightseeing, exploring, shopping, dinners out, etc.

  2. Me,

I always suggest getting a copy of Fodors or going online to Lonely Planet, Trip Advisor or even the travel site on the New York Times. I follow Fordor's suggestions without question. They have never taken where we did not want to go.

    Thankyou for the comments.

Five Little Ducks...stories played out!

The children's song about the little ducks leaving the nest to fly away has always been one of my favorites.  Every mother has seen their babies fly away and rejoiced. Life comes full circle. Animals live that same cycle. Babies grow up. Birds leave the nest. Life goes on. So when the three ducks show up every year near my patio I am not surprised. But I am puzzled that it always seems to be the same three. Something just doesn't seem right. It appears the one did not fly away at all. Five little ducks Went out to play Over the hills and far away. The mommy duck went "quack, quack quack," Four little ducks came swimming back... And then Three Two and One. A drake, a female duck (a hen) and a not quite a drake but still not a hen gather here on the 5th green of the golf course. She leads and the other two follow along obediently. They eat, sleep, and guard each other. Each and every day this time of year they come.  I have not named them. Jinxing them would be very pos...

How to be a 12 Month Snow Bird

Vacation Rental in Mexico I live around snowbirds 6 months of the year. I have heard those people say that they all want to live the "snowbird" lifestyle when they go home. But it just is not possible. They are isolated and cold. Social activities with friends and beautiful weather are greatly missed when they return to the realities of their "real" life. One couple I visited with lately returned to Florida this morning where they own a home. The woman is a nurse and works in the summer. They are not going home until May this year. It is too cold in Michigan in the spring so they are hoping to extend their good weather season by simply staying away. Besides that they love their Florida lifestyle a lot. Last week I visited with a woman that lives the snowbird lifestyle year around. No going home to the Midwest in the spring. They essentially vacation 12 month out of the year. And I thought their solution for avoiding unpleasant weather and keeping their lifestyle in...

If You Build It, They Will Come...Maybe!

It all began with a antique window in front of a local shop. It had been painted yellow, the glass was loose and all of the hinges and latches were gone. My old friend Betty would have approved...she would tell me it was just broken enough and damaged enough for me to drag it home. When my dear husband saw it, he wondered what he was meant to do with it. Imagine his surprise when he was presented with the plan to build a small neighborhood library exchange. It wasn't the first time he had heard me ask "How hard could it be?" Now it is six weeks later and we mounted the darling little library exchange on two posts in our front yard. I love it. Now the question is, will they come or has the time passed when people actually read something made of paper? Our association president stopped by and admired the box but left after telling me that he only read books on his Kindle. We will see. Would you bring a book and take a book? b+
